The fuzzy headed, rather bizarre looking young egrets grow into such beautiful adults -- quite a transformation! This puzzle turned out to be a little harder for me than I'd expected.

I agree with Kay. Egrets are like swans, start off ordinary and grow beautifully

Awesome photo, thanks kr! I think all baby birds are pretty ugly at first!! But nearly all grow into very beautiful birds.

So true, Kate. I've never really seen a pretty baby bird. This is another photo donated by my cousin, a wildlife photographer, another of his rejects. I always pass along the compliments.

Kay, you've never seen a chick? Some of those more unusual colored ones are beautiful. Or a baby Killdeer. Lovely.
The ground nesting birds tend to be born covered with down (and some even have feathers when they hatch, and can fly in a couple of hours) and run almost immediately. The ones born in nests off the ground are born naked and helpless and, dare I say it, ugly.

I have a couple of bird houses on my patio -- have watched many, many generations of sparrows come and go. Those babies are SO ugly and insistent on being fed. I love watching and keeping an eye out for bluejays who love to raid the nest. Ugh.

He was sitting on the yellow line in the middle of a busy NJ highway in pouring rain. We stopped on the side and went and scooped him up, and kept him More...
