In the U.S. they would have pulled it down as earthquake hazard. the EU is smarter.

I cannot imagine anyone in the U.S. pulling down a magnificent structure like this! There would be a HUGE public outcry. I think San Francisco, with it's fault lines, might do that, but no-one else would.

What is the tower? Is it part of something else or is it all that is left of a very old building or fortress? The part of Iowa where I live has only been settled about 125 years.

I like this photo too, and am also very curious about the tower. I suppose it could have been a "lookout" tower, standing alone. Or not.

Hi All - Sorry, I hadn't realized this picture had come up on the jig saw puzzles. It is a "street scene" from Florence, Italy. We were walking along the Arno river and across the river, I saw this tower in the midst of some very nice looking villas. I don't know any more about it. More...
