Perhaps not for you Richard but every creature has a place in the larger scheme of things. Just leave them alone - I don't think they care much for people either!

That was one of the hardest puzzles, ever! Great pic. Sankes are ok for me but I detest the eight legged crawlies.

In the spring it's not uncommon for us to find a cotton mouth water moccosin sunning on our deck early in the morning. Usually my husband has shooed them away before I get up (bless his soul). Our back yard ends at the river, so we get all sorts of creatures at times. I don't fear them from a distance, but I strongly respect them!

I've always said that snakes are our friends. They eat the vermin that spread diseases and plagues, ruin food in storage and get in the walls of our homes and destroy things while nesting.

Growing up on a farm, we always took a snake stick with us when we were outside and taught to listen to the birds as they would tell us when a snake was around.

Dino is this one of yours? I can't believe anyone got close enough to take this shot, browns are one of the most aggressive snakes. I too believe in all creatures having their place in the grand scheme but I would never get this close to a brown snake

I wouldn't purposefully get that close to a snake either, but I do believe in live and let live.

chickens....
I have handled many poisonous snakes... it's not that bad as long as you maintain a healthy respect for them.

Heidi, see here:
"The Brown Snake may be found all over Australia. It has extremely potent venom, and although the quantity of venom injected is usually small, this snake causes more snakebite deaths in Australia than any other. Sudden and relatively early deaths have been recorded. Its More...

Judy... believe it or not, I have handled THE most poisonous snake in the world. It's a type of sea snake. Black with yellow polka dots. One drop of it's venom is INSTANT death.
I do NOT recommend anyone doing that, by the way. I have had some professional training.

Oh, I believe you, Heidi. I think you ought to retract the "chickens" remark, though. Especially as you say you do NOT recommend our doing it. PS: Dino, if you took that photo -- yikes! Snakes

The "chickens" remark pertained to people who are so afraid of snakes that a photo of one scares them. There is a big difference between a phobia, which is unreasoning fear, and healthy respect.

I think I have a bit of both, Heidi. I'm not really afraid of a photo of a snake, but I'm prone to having nightmares if I look at one too long. So, I usually just give it a quick glance and move on. I agree with you about the good things that snakes do for us and for nature. That doesn't prevent the nightmares, though.
