Gorgeous Heron.

Joe, the kind you are thinking of is the Great Blue Heron. They are REALLY common in Kentucky. So common, that I had to build my goldfish ponds up next to my house to keep the Herons from eating my goldfish.

I always think of herons as having long legs. Is this a short-legged version, or is it sitting with legs bent out of sight? Heidi, did your original goldfish ponds happen to have Golden Arches over them? I'll bet the herons thought they had made the big time with their own line of fast food spots!

No, Gramma Linda. The Herons spend a lot of time in the farm ponds, happily munching away on young catfish, bluegill and Smallmouth bass, as well as frogs and anything else they can grab. I just didn't want them expanding their diets.

Which explains why I only have one "outside" goldfish and have named it "sole" or "soul survivor." Everything else was picked off by critters of one kind or another -- birds, snakes, possum, raccoons, etc. And I live in the city.

Nice photo - I think our herons have long legs and are white, or am I thinking of egrets?

Great photo! Thanks KR. The Egrets are white, Candace. Out herons are a grey/blue colour with a white face, called..........White faced Heron!!!!!!!!And another is brownish grey & it's called the Great Billed Heron! They both have long legs. The white faced one is rather small! Heidi when I was More...

We had a goldfish pond, but finally fill it in. First I lost my mosquito fish, we planted more plants, then we put in more mosquito fish, then goldfish, but the mosquitoes kept surviving so we gave up. (It took three years, and we never got it right)

We've had a lot of trouble with Kookaburras getting our goldfish! We had to put a fishing net over the top of the pond to keep them out.
Pretty bird KR, good capture!

There are many types of herons, Gramma Linda, some with long legs and others with not-so-long legs. This photo was taken by my cousin, who is a wildlife photographer. He gives me many of his rejects for painting references, and this is one of those. The Great Blues, as well as Little Blue and Tri-Colored herons are plentiful in our area as well.

OK, people... there are Great White Herons (4 1/2 ft tall and found only in Florida), American Egrets (white and 3 ft. tall), Snowy Egrets (around 2 ft tall) and Cattle Egrets (20 inches tall). All found in the USA. Candace's birds could be any of these. They are all proportionately long legged.
