I think this bird is also known as the Loggerhead Shrike. I remember my Dad telling me about these birds. Funny how certain things stick in your head.

They are different birds jacaimi, but do look similar on Google. The grey butcherbird is only found in Australia and is Cractcus torquatus. The Loggerhead shrike is Lanius ludovicianus. They are very similar in appearance though, with similar habits.

The kookaburra is a kingfisher and the butcherbird is in the same family as magpies.

Yes, I confess it is one of mine Kate. They do have beautiful song and don't mind where they hang their dinner. My neighbour found a mouse draped over her sundial.
