Some dragonflies are very colorful. Pretty good for a species that is at least 300,000,000 year old!

I had to laugh at the comment. After Kate's precise naming of the duck on 'easy' to 'some kind of dragonfly' I had quite a chuckle!!

That was funny! I was going to look it up but discovered I don't seem to have a basic "All About Bugs" book of any sort. I remember going to buy one and not finding anything suitable for my level of ignorance (I like Peterson guides but the bookstore didn't carry any of them). Darn. I wanted to astonish you folks with my knowledge! Oh well.

Well, Joan, I too have several field guides, but not on insects. However, I've seen this fellow (well, his/her relative) often before in WV, so I consulted the internet. (Not an option in the field, but fine with a photo!) I somehow think it looks like a bi-plane with flaps down... Here is what I More...

I believe you are correct, Cyn. The photos on the Web of the Common Whitetail look identical. He's very attractive. My first thought was that he looks like he's getting ready to flag down the winner in a NASCAR auto race.

LOL, Kay! On some of them, the "flag" on the wing is black rather than brown as this one has, which would be closer to the black and white checkered flag!

We have a lot of these around here. With 2 farm ponds, a creek and a goldfish pond, and flowers, there's a lot to attract them. Thanks for saving me the time to ID him.
