The green-backed heron is very common in the eastern U.S. They are smaller than most herons, short and stocky, and are hard to see because they stand very still while waiting for prey and are usually well camoflaged in their surroundings. The coloring in this photo is a little greener than actual, they are a more grayish color except for the maroon collar and green feathers on their backs/wings.
