Yes, Heidi, but EVENTUALLY the forces of erosion will topple this, too. There was a pinnacle in Seneca Rocks called "The Gendarme", and there was an established and popular climbing route on it. Then, in 1987, it fell ... nothing is forever!

Impressive, Fi! I didn't know that about the pinnacle, Cyn - is it readily visible from the road and visitor's center? Maybe I have an old photo of it, taken during my days of doing Monongahela National Forest surveys - I used to drive by there frequently and sometimes stopped just to look at the area.

Great photo, Fi! These things do fall, though, as Cyn mentioned. We had one in OK, chimney rock, that one day was just down. And, I believe, a rather important one in Utah fell not long ago. Tis true, nothing is forever. So, let the good times roll now!

Well, Joan, the Gendarme is no more, though the climbing store in Seneca Rocks is still named after its once most-famous formation. I haven't climbed there, though a lot of our Pittsburgh climbing friends often go there. I understand there can be a traffic jam of climbers at the descent point More...
