From Wikipedia, we learn: In the biology of trees, a cypress knee is a distinctive structure in a root of a cypress tree of any of various species of the subfamily Taxodioideae. Their function is unknown, but they are generally seen in swamps. Some scientists have thought they may help in providing More...

My husband has a little table made from cypress knees, according to his grandmother. She died in about '98 or '99 at the age of 98 or 99, she never could remember. She had it for much of her married life, making the table quite old. It's mostly a curiosity or conversation piece, it's too small for much more than a cup and saucer.

Judy, you said it better than I could have , but you're quoting. My little nuggets of wisdom come only from my memory.

I REALLY want to get a smilie sticking it's tongue out.

It's incredible how nature is so adaptive. Thanks for the info, Judy. I have just found two smilies with their tongue out and submitted as smilies.

Thakns for the explanation, Judy. I had always heard the stabilization theory. These particular ones are in the Lousiana bayous, but I've seen them all over, from the east coast to the west coast.

Please pardon my "thakns" typo. I really do know how to spell -- my fingers just get ahead of my brain at times.

Great photo & puzzle! Australian mangrove trees have small aerial roots that are their breathing tubes, too. Don't grow as big as your cypresses though! But they only grow in the water along edges or along the coast.

I just noticed that I badly misspelled cypress. The only excuse I can offer is that I was uploading this batch around 4:00 a.m., and I have a Greek friend from Cyprus so I type that word quite often. I guess my brain was running on automatic and pulled up the wrong version....
