I love woodpeckers, except when they're pecking on the house gutters . We see a lot of them. My favorite is the pilliated ones, they sound like a jungle bird!

A pretty bird. This one looks like a red-capped woodpecker!

This is a rather misleading name, since the "red patch on the lower abdomen is seldom visible in the field." The red-headed woodpecker's entire head IS bright red. Kate's name would be more appropriate -- although the pileated woodpecker has a bright red cap, too! (although it's actually more of a crest than a cap...)

I'm just glad he has a determined glint in his eye and a long beak, because he isn't exactly right next to that woodpecker block!

TerrierCyn--the 'red patch on the lower abdomen' isn't too visible in the photo either--there's a lot of the belly showing in that shot. I don't think I've ever seen a woodpecker outside of cartoons!

Ceri, It's a pretty small patch, and actually more like a light dusting of red between the legs. We have a lot of woodpeckers here, and they have an odd and distinctive cry (and of course, all the noise they make when they are rat-a-tat-tat-ing that strong bill into wood to find insects or make a nesting hole.
