Kay, excellent picture, better than the brochures, I'm sure. This structure was built for the rescue of ship-wreck survivors back in 1897. Thousands of people were rescued while it was in operation. It operated until 1944. Because of beach erosion it was moved from Nauset Beach to the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown and made into a museum with artifacts of rescue equipment, ect.

for the info, shar. Great history. I'm glad they saved the building. It helped save enough people.

Beautiful and interesting old building. It looks like it was expanded as the need arose.

Ditto to all the comments above, are they doing restoration work on it, it looks like scaffolding on the side. I love how they are now keeping historic buildings going instead of letting them fall into disrepair.

My husband has a close cousin who lives on Cape Cod, and we visit as often as we can. This was a photo just waiting to be snapped. Thank Mother Nature for the perfect setting! We have a similar one on the Outer Banks of NC that I also submitted. Thanks much for the story, shar!

I actually live in the Capt. Alan Hallet house whose father came over on the Mayflower and settled on Cape Cod. His name was Joseph Hallet. The house was built in 1767, just an old Cape Cod "long house" meaning add ons to the original building. It was never registered as an historical More...
