I gather that it's some type of Indonesian Shadow play. Maybe with puppets?

Definately shadow puppets - first thing I thought of. The camera really picks up the light behind though - when you are watching the shadow puppets, you just don't perceive the light.

They are ornate puppets, made from buffalo hide and highly decorated. The puppets are then used to perform the plays which are watched in shadow.
