This is a large one. I hope that the few Hopi carvers that are still active will not let this tradition die out, though it's questionable whether or not young ones will go through the extensive training required. There are many "copies" of Hope Kachina dolls, but only those carved by the Hopi craftsmen are authentic.

What is this Kachina supposed to represent?

I'd love to know more about this piece and where it fits if anyone has that information. I gather from Kay that it's carved--in 1 piece or a series of pieces that fit together? from what? and with what meaning?

An interesting picture with many natural and man-made shapes. Made a puzzling puzzle. For a while, I thought the Kachina was an elaborate oriental jewelry box!

It's a sort of totem, or doll, representing the major forces that influence the Hopis lives. For example, thunder, rain, corn, sun, moon, and the seasons.

As I look at this one, it appears to be a modern stylized corn kachina.

Many of the traditional craftsmanship has been lost, so sad.

Thank you Wilodene for sharing this with us.
