I feed these beautiful birds at my back door too. Chatter away non stop.39 deg C here again today, 3rd day in a row and another week forecast the same. Bring on autumn!
 |  |
prettiest bird in the world, maybe? Fun puzzle too!
 |  |
Oh, that would be wonderful to be able to feed such beautiful birds.
 |  |
A 'squark'? I don't think I've ever heard or read of that term before. At least not in conjunction with birds. It is a physics term (a variation of a quark). Lorikeets are beautiful birds. These appear to be Rainbow Lorikeets. Nice puzzle too.

A painter could never capture this beauty on canvas. Isn't nature great.
 |  |
Ohhh, very very beautiful birds!

Lories and lorikeets are small to medium-sized arboreal parrots which comprise the subfamily Loriinae. They are widely distributed throughout the Australasian region, including south-eastern Asia, Polynesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia, and the majority have very brightly colored plumage.

Rainbow Lorikeets grow to 25-30 cm (9.8-11.8 in) in size, with a wingspan of about 17 cm (6.7 in) and vary significantly in colouration between the numerous subspecies. Their eponymous markings of the best known subspecies moluccanus are particularly striking: A dark blue or violet-blue head and More...

They have a squawk of Lorikeets in Marie World, Valleo, California. You can go in the cage with them and feed them necture from a small cup.

HOw wonderful to have these flying around in your yard. Fun puzzle
 |  |
Aptly named ,all the colours of the rainbow, will have to be content with feeding the sparrows.
 |  |
Doug/Sebring, I invented the collective noun 'Squark' because it closely resembles the noise these birds make. They are colourful, but noisy.

Some fun AND educational photos today! As well as delightful photos! Thanks!

Thanks for all the knowledge I'm gaining on this site, to say nothing of the gorgeous pictures.
 |  |
Great puzzle...enjoyed the beautiful colors of these birds!
 |  |
Glorious lorikeets, thank you, Ian! Under 'beautiful birds,' I found the golden pheasant to be striking. Plus I've always admired the painted bunting. Who can choose the world's most anything?
 |  |
Judy, that's a very profound question - I can't answer it, can anyone?
 |  |
Who can choose the world's most anything? Anything what?
 |  |
Most beautiful bird, most interesting bug, ugliest dog, cutest kitten, most acrobatic monkey, etc.
As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I would imagine the ability to critique the 'world's most anything' would also have a lot to do with the beholder.
 |  |
Well said, Kal Gal! And, thank you, Ian. I do love your lorikeets!
 |  |
Actually, The Guinness Book of Records attempted to answer part of the question.
 |  |
my mum has a few, very cheeky with very loud mouths for such a beautiful bird, they are more common than magpies around my area Toronto/Carey Bay
 |  |
I have photos of the lorikeets in my kitchen raiding the fruit bowl. I had not closed the window properly.
 |  |
What does the Guiness book say, Ian? Kelley, June -- sounds like they are terrible rascals! I guess God made them pretty so we'd put up with their naughty ways.
 |  |
Changing the subject for a minute, it's 18F here, with a wind chill that takes it down to 8F. Not common this late in March. Where is global warming when you could use a little of it?
 |  |
Judy, I'm going to bail out of the discussion because I will be spending all day tomorrow driving down to Melbourne (about 1000 km each way) and I need my beauty sleep. I'll only get back onto these pages when someone is kind enough to let me use their computer. Bye all.
 |  |
Ian/Sydney, that explains it. I think you ought to offer the term to whoever keeps the definitions for flocks of birds. It is certainly better than a 'murder of crows' and much more descriptive.
