What kind of bird is this?

A fine Kookaburra. A member of the Kingfisher family and fond of a good laugh.

Still fun with all that grey & a very clear photo.

He is such a cutie and I have heard their laugh. Very unusual birds.

They also like to eat snakes

Reminds me of the girl scouts songs around the campfire at night! 'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the jungle he' etc.

It is a repeat but still fun. Neat bird.

Looks small. I thought it was a large bird. I read about it all the time. Lovely romance books.

Also called the laughing jackass - they do seem to catch you doing something silly and have a good laugh.

They are a beautiful bird and we feed two of them every day in our back yard. They are very good at keeping snakes away from the house but are a little naughty as they raid the nests of smaller birds and sometimes kill the babies. Nature can be cruel but we feel if we keep them well fed, they may leave the Willy Wagtail babies alone.

We also, rather irreverentlt, used to sing 'Kookaburra sits on the telegraph wire, jumping up and down 'cos his pants on fire'!!
