I've never heard of a termite nest up in a tree like this. Always in the ground. But I'm not an insect expert. They "bug" me too much.

No, I never heard of termites nesting up a tree. That's different. We just had to take our tree down...termites in the base. It was still a beautiful tree, but too dangerous to keep. 80 years old and it only took an hour to demolish it. I loved that tree!

I'm just glad it isn't a wasps' nest of some kind. Aside from the ugly brown "wart" on the tree, it's a beautiful shot of trees and sky. Will the termites eventually eat themselves out of house and home??

I thought this was your's Kate! Thanks great jigsaw & photo! These termites don't damage the tree to the same extent as the other termites! In fact these feed baby lace monitors/goannas! Mu climbs the tree puts a hole in the nest, climbs in, lays her eggs, gets out, reseals the nest, waits till More...

I've never seen nor heard of a termite nest in a tree, either. I'm glad to hear that this type of termite does not do extreme damage to the tree. That's just one of many strange sights I've encountered here on the site. Very interesting explanation, Kate from Sydney! Great photo, the other Kate!
