Talk about anything and everything, but place your comments in the right categories so that people on slow internet connections can still enjoy the site. Also, be nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Yes, ntd, it does appear as if everyone is out shopping. Some of the stores around here opened at 4:00 AM. People were lined up before midnight in tents, etc., waiting for the doors to open. Now they are serious shoppers!! I don't believe anything is that important for me to be waiting for the More...

I wondered if we have to waitfor the amber room to change to green, or jade, before we can go in!!!!

Fascinating to read that this is a reconstruction, as the original was looted by the Nazis and its whereabouts is unknown. Also that the original was in Prussia and was then given to the tsar as a gift and moved to St. Petersburg! Thank you Wikipedia!

Thank you Richard for the explanation. I have always admired amber in jewellery, but a whole room full of it - walls and ceiling - is overpowering. I only had time to wonder about the craftsmanship involved and the value of this fabulous room before our guide whisked us off to the next room in our tour of Catherine Palace.

Due to its singular beauty, it was sometimes dubbed the 'Eighth Wonder of More...

Thanks, Ian for a lovely photo and DotCom for your research! I hope the Amber Room 'lives' somewhere. It is so sad to see the damage the recent wars have done to ancient structures and artifacts. Lost forever.

I'm with you Big Red. It's just not worth the wait, I hate waiting it's in my sign. I love all the red and gold in this room. 01/21/08

Having not seen the original Amber Room, the reconstruction is lavish and beautiful. Just viewing the photo is nearly overwhelming. Thanks again, Ian.
