The Sand Dollar is a spiny, hard-skinned animal that is shaped like a coin. There are many different species of sand dollars. They live on the sandy sea floor, and most are found at depths of 30 to 40 feet (9-12 m). You can often find the dead 'shell' of a sand dollar (called a 'test') washed up on sandy beaches. If you break open a test, there are many hard, loose, white pieces; these were the teeth of the Sand Dollar. / kr NC

Also, be nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Great picture KR.. If I may add to the biology lesson...Sand dollars are closely related to sea urchins with which they share this tooth structure. If you are fortunate enough to open one with the tooth parts still held together , you will see an intricate structure that looks like a little More...

Thank you everyone, both for the puzzle and the language lesson: to say nothing of the botany lesson. It is wonderful to get pleasure and information in one lovely package.

My mother-in-law loved sand dollars. To her, the five openings represented the head, hands, and feet of the crucified Jesus and the 'teeth' inside were peace doves. There was more, but that's all I remember. My in-laws wintered for a number of years in Florida. Didn't want you to think we had sand dollars in Iowa!! Seems like any dollars are getting more and more rare here.

I picked up a bunch of these in Costa Rica. If you ever go there, Tamarindo beach is a marvelous shelling site!
