This is my photo taken at a recent local Show.

My favourite colour. It's absolutely beautiful, Ian.

Another wonderful picture of a beautiful flower. Not many of us think of taking this kind of photo.

A beautiful first prize rose...thanks, Ian!

Ian, you have a real photographer's eye. I've seen many a prize winning flower but never thought of taking a picture of one. I have a friend who took a picture of his baby daughter sleeping, great shot, Iwould never have thought of it.

I took a picture of a bouquet of white roses, but, I didn't focus on one so I could make a pretty picture like this one. It is still lovely, though...you can't go wrong with a rose.

'A rose by any other name, would be the same.'
I too love roses. I was taught to prune them prpoerly by Anne's Dad when he was alive, they had large and spectacularly beautiful rose beds all around the house in UK I have lots of rose stories, but I won't bore you with them right now.

Pam, before I attempt to answer your question, please bear in mind that I am not a gardener - I fly aeroplanes.
The basics are - get rid of dead wood and weak shoots. Don't be afraid to cut hard - roses are pretty tough, Cut just above an outside bud. Remember what it looked like when you More...

You know, some people get smarter as they get older, that doesn't seem to be happening with me. Pam, I should have said to you - 'Buy a book on the subject'. But I didn't and attempted to answer your question, thereby opening up 'The Great Rose Debate'. Actually, I am going out for the day for a More...

Thank you Ian. The roses have been here since before we moved in, so I don't know what size they were, but I'm sure a bit of trial and error should work as long as the bush is forgiving.

Ian...love the fact that you were willing to take a chance......yet you gave a fair warning...good onya! No one knows it all...yet sometimes we are right....

Ian you did a great job. From an average library of gardening books, you may have wrote one yourselve. during dormant times it is best to cut the stems at an angle.
Here that is best done in the Fall and plant the bush in February. But for Canada I would check with you almanac or if you have a More...

I left this puzzle till the next day, and what a joy in the colours! I am so glad I did not try it with bleary eyes.

Pam, I am back from our day out on the Harbour, great day by the way. I don't know how old are your rose bushes but the fact that they are still surviving is a start.
Mamacita 2, thanks for your support.
Karen, thank you for your contribution, it is practical and helpful - worth more than two cents I'm sure.

Thanks for the rose and the information Ian.

Beautiful picture and the puzzle wasn't as difficult as I anticipated. Thanks Ian for the picture. And Pam, where in Canada are you?

I am a few days behind, so I don't know if anyone will read this late post, but also when you cut a bud or blossom. You go back to the 5 leaf group of leaves and cut your bud there. You also do this for the deadheading. They will continue to bloom. I think I had better get out and cut my dead More...
