This is very interesting, Dino. What kind of objects were typically fired in an old kiln like this one? I no longer do clay sculpture but still find it fascinating to learn about the differents methods of firing throughout history. Wonderful picture!

Lime kilns were established at Walkerville in 1875, and finally closed in 1926. Initially firewood was gathered from the local forests, but after these were destroyed, coke was brought in by sea to fire the kilns. The lime was transported out by sea to markets in Melbourne. Thanks for the info, Dino. Duh! It would make sense to fire lime in a "lime kiln." I just did some research on the subject, and learned a lot of fascinating facts about lime and "lime burning." Very interesting!
