I think that is the Goddess Iris holding the staff whose/which name I've forgotten. Caduces? Cadeas? George Clooney? Tart!

Nice shot, appy - enjoyed the puzzle a lot.

It is a caduceus, Judy, and is normally held by Hermes/Mercury.

I'm glad you (plural) got the medical staff thing pinpointed. I didn't know its name, either. Now I'm wondering about what she/he (Is there or isn't there a bosom under that rob?) in her/his right hand. Looks to me like a skeletal leg and foot holding down a big tortoise. Or maybe a bucket with a More...

I'm awed by the sculptors who can make hard stone look like flesh and very fluid fabric. And the details! No power tools on these old statues, either ... and every detail has symbolism (often lost of those who don't know all the old legends and myths ... and even on those who do! I certainly USED to know a lot of the Greek and Roman mythology ...)
