When I was in the band in San Francisco, The teacher made me were a skirt. No trousers for young ladies. I was the only girl in band ( it was ROTC) They needed a french horn and I was it.

I played a french horn when I was in high school. Our band director said they didn't belong in a marching band, so I played the coronet or the flugel horn (kind of a bugle with keys). It didn't really matter, we had to have our music and various marching routines memorized. I couldn't do both More...

OH! about the puzzle! Good one. Our uniforms were wool, worn with a white dress shirt, tie, white buck shoes, and a tall cadet-type hat with about 6 inches of feather on top of that. And we ALWAYS performed in them, whether it was a July parade or a November football game. We were tough in the "old days".

I love the idea of just "faking" your playing, Gramma Linda. My daughter loved band, but hated marching, so did the flag squad instead. Our retired band director passed away in August and it's amazing how many students said he changed their lives. They played at his funeral!
