A proud bird, thank you very much, if a bit bedraggled. Thanks, Kate

Maybe just a bad hair day? I met one at a petting zoo when I was about 10yrs old and it stole a dollar out of my hand and promptly ate it. The animals are my favorite pictures, thank you for this one Kate.

Excellent shot, Kate -- I do hope he/she didn't follow through on that look! Funny, I thought emus had long legs, similar to the ostriches'. Learn something every day -- provided one doesn't forget. Vici, I love that smilie! Hope everyone is wel.

Emus DO have long legs like Ostriches. The camera just cut them off.

Emus often have a 'part' like that! My abiding memory of emus is from a Year 1 (6/7 year olds) excursion to Koala Park where an emu tried to eat the arm of a school boy's jumper (sweater) ... while he was still wearing it! I've kept my respectful distance ever since! Gorgeous birds, More...

Not that they are dangerous I hasten to add ... or at least no more dangerous than any wild creature. You can often wander around with them free in many zoos and safari parks ... but they are still not domesticated animals and so not to be taken for granted. An adult can quite easily shoo them along but they'd ignore a child (way too short).

A more recent memory is of a determined bird deciding it was time to leave the Wild Australia exhibit at Taronga Zoo and explore the rest of the zoo. There are double gates so you have to close one gate before you open another to enter/exit. By sheer bravado (and height) he had bluffed his way More...

I love the emu but have great respect of their ability to attack if frightened, but dad taught me to wave your arms around to let them think that you are bigger. Never turn your back on one if you have food in your hand

Kate - my one emu story is somewhat similar: a friend from the National zoo had taken my husband, Bill, and myself and four young nieces and nephews around the Conservation Center (in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia) in a weapons carrier-type of truck to go into the various enclosures. Bill's job More...

Wonderful story thanks Joan! My Grandfather used to have a "blow" Emu Egg. It was dark green & felt slightly embossed & very big. Apparently the contents equaled at least a dozen large chicken eggs. It had been blown many years previously! Glad you all enjoyed the photo - certainly brought forth some interesting stories!

There is an Emu farm at Digby Neck Nova Scotia. These emus had longer necks and head feathers looked like crew cuts. They reproduced so prolifically that the farm was able to supply the local eateries and meat markets. We had to try an Emu Burger and it was quite good, tasted like wild turkey. Do you Aussies eat Emu?
