I love the way the dark green in shadow blends through to the vivid yellow, with a splash of 'curse' purple for good measure!

Paterson's Curse (aka Salvation Jane) introduced to South Australia as a sheep feed. Sheep wouldn't eat it in its mature state and as a prolific seeder it spread and spread (and spread). Is drought resistant so tolerates Australian condition very well.

When flowering, we see paddocks of canola from our home (along with splatterings of purple) - vivid yellow. Driving from here to Queensland on the Newell Highway at the right (?) time, you can see purple, purple, purple.......

Really striking photo, Kate. I was totally puzzled by the caption until I read the comments here. The only way I've ever seen canola is as oil in a bottle in the kitchen and I had no eartly idea what Paterson's Curse was. We have the curse of Kudzu here, which can completely gobble up More...

Elizabeth, next time you drive along the Newell Highway drop in on me in Dubbo.

Thanks for the explanations, everybody. It sounds far worse than Kudzu- a true curse. Kudzu is at least relished by sheep and goats... in fact, they love it and can eat it faster than it can grow!!!!

And all because one Jane Patterson wanted a few purple flowers for her garden. It looks beautiful, too -- but not if it's killing off your livestock or gobbling up your land. Now, kudzu, Kay -- I think I read that stuff can grow as much as a foot a day. Yikes! PS: Had no idea where canola came from either.

I think Pattersons' Curse is also referred to as Lady Campbell over this way as well as P.C. Don't ask me why!

Also known as Salvation Jane, so called because it was believed to be the salvation of the farmers during times of drought and now I know what the 'Jane' bit refers to, thanks to Judy!
