A question here.... Do Chinese New Years start on January First??
27/May/08 2:20 AM

Nooooooooooooooo, Heidi! Here's a blurb from Wikipedia "Chinese New Year is observed as a public holiday in a number of countries and territories where a sizable Chinese population resides. Since Chinese New Year falls on different dates on the Gregorian calendar every year on different days More...

There is so much work put in to preparing these floats, they are so detailed and beautiful. Thanks Kate.

'That's my year!' cries my daughter as it comes up. And it is too. I then declare it is my year too (which it is - and her father's - we're all horses). Then ensues a technical argument about this being a water horse due to the presence of the blue to one side and therefore her horse, not my horse which is a fire horse. Well versed for a 6 year old, isn't she!

She just followed up that water can put out fire! I'm in for a power-struggle here ...

There is definitely a rabbit float to come - by my count there are 18 parade photos that haven't been seen yet ... I've lost count of how many have been but I guess we may be halfway through? Funnily enough - the rat photos haven't been seen yet (and Heidi seems to be hanging out for them judging by some earlier remarks).

"Magical" is what I thought when this picture first emerged. A pink horse with purple hooves -- what can be more magical than that? These parade pics just get better and better, Kate. Thank you!

I don't understand...why Horse/Rat year? Why is it not one or the other? Please explain.

Wikipedia rides again! "The Chinese Zodiac is a 12 year cycle. Each year of the 12 year cycle is named after one of the original 12 animals. Each animal has a different personality and different characteristics. The animal is believed to be the main factor in each person's life that gives More...

There is a float for each animal sign. They appear randomly during every annual parade. You wouldn't want them to be moth-balled for 11 out of 12 years would you?! And people like to see their own sign go past!

Judy, you answered my questions before I even asked! (Thank you, Big Red & Heidi...) Now I'll have to find out my sign, too.

Well, everyone report in on his/her sign tomorrow, OK? I'm looking forward to seeing the rabbit float, Kate! My dad was a rabbit too. That is just a fabulous parade -- would love to see it. As I've said, am just so glad to see it through your camera lense!

I'm a rabbit too!

My dad is also a rabbit - and my mother is a dragon.
