Fed up with these birds. They are around all the time trying to take the food we have for our magpie, raven, butcher bird and mudlark families. Any ideas on how to dissuade them? The water pistol filled with all sorts of stuff hasn't worked .....

True, Elizabeth. You'll have about as much luck getting rid of the gulls as I have getting rid of a dominant male hummingbird.

I agree with everyone, they are such a pest when you are trying to relax on the beach. Elizabeth when you figure out how to get rid of them let me know and I will try it on the Mynar birds we have here

Tourists love to buy loaves of bread and/or junk food and feed it to the gulls, bite by bite. This is a popular activity at the ferry landing, which results in every car in line being bombed with seagull poop. Don't people know that junk food isn't good for wild (or domestic) creatures ???? !

I've had some suggestions that I wouldn't try because I consider them cruel. However after today.... mum raven has only been in twice this week and dad raven comes in several times a day and takes an enourmous beak full of food. Why don't you just stop feeding ALL the birds. They've survived for millennia without humans feeding them, they'll survive without you feeding them. No food, no seagulls bothering you.
This IS their planet as much as yours, remember.

We don't have problems with seagulls here simply because our beach does not get a lot of tourists so the birds do not expect food. In fact I've never seen one in my garden even though we are only a few hundred metres from the sea.

Just so no one misunderstands --I wasn't ranting about the seagulls, I was ranting about the people who feed them junk food.

I remember years ago relaxing on Daytona Beach (used to live there) with an open bag of Doritos. My three yr.old daughter was playing in the sand. The people next to me were feeding the seagulls and pelicans. All of a sudden a gull from on high flew over and dropped a thnakyou splat right into my bag. I've never eaten a Dorito since! Ha ha ha.
