And truly amazing to see up close and more distant as the light changes--at dawn and sunset. I've got some photos of Uluru in the system somewhere. Hope you don't mind the repetition.

Wow! Is the ground around the rock also this color? Are there smaller rocks like this on the surface around the rock? Just: WOW!!

Yes Gramma Linda there are smaller rocks relatively nearby. Most of central Australia is this colour. The Olgas are also called Kata Juta, which means many headed. The whole area is national park. To my surprise the local distance signs don't have a letter identifying the next town, just an outline of the rock!

There are so many different views and colourings of this great rock, especially at different times of the day. More I sayG Linda, yes, the ground is the same colour, the middle of Australia is commonly referred to as 'The Red Centre'. When we had a dust storm in the town I was born in, everyone knew to get everything inside because it would be coated in a thick layer of red dust!

Great picture of Uluru.
It is not well know that the biggest rock (monolith) in Australia is Mt Augustus in Western Australia. It is not as bare as Uluru and not well known, but is more that twice as big. http://www.discoverwest.com.au/western_australia/mt_augustus.html
