Kate, the road is a dirt road with gravel added to some of the more difficult spots. One definitely needs a high clearance vehicle and 4-wheel drive helps. Great sign picture. Brings up lots of questions and imagination pictures. The northeast corner of Iowa was missed by the last ice age glaciers and so has steep hills and sharp (road) corners. We saw a number of similar signs while visiting there. And they weren't kidding! If brakes went out on the way down some of them, the Mississippi was a definite possibility!!
