The San Francisco Zoo used to have lots of them. 70 years ago I remember one flew from just in front of me into a tree. I was scared. Don't think I cried though.

I saw my first live one at the San Fran. Zoo. Can't ttell you how disappointed I was with the HONK that sounded more like a semi than a bird.

Ah ha!!..a picture of mine after ages of submission...well I wonder if the ppl who complains abt the call of the peacock, have really seen the beauty of the bird!! The cascading tail or the train as it is referred, has eye like configuration in blue and green/bluish green which reflects rainbow More...

Believe it or not, a wealthy family in our area had a few peacocks. They roamed the property freely...they were used as 'watch birds'...they would honk like crazy if a stranger was around and even follow them. Like the noise or not, you knew if someone was about.

Congratulations on a very nice photo, Appy. I'm sure it is gratifying to see your work displayed. The peacock is, indeed, a magnificent creature! I didn't know it was your national bird. A great choice!

Believe it or not, they run wild around our neighborhood. About 8 years ago, somebody dumped a dozen or so off in the middle of the night. You can get used to the yells of, what sounds like, "HELP". Plus, I have guineas. The peacocks are louder, but the guineas are MUCH more irritating.

My husband used to have peacocks. Yes, they are beautiful creatures -- and great watchbirds. Yes, they make a noise that is several degress below being joyful, but you do get used to it. I also agree with Heidi that noise from guineas is much more irritating!

I saw some while visiting some castle in Scotland..they were almost too beautiful to describe and luckily they didn't make a noise...I was surprised to hear that that their call is offensive.

Not so much offensive as irritating. They are stunningly beautiful to look at but, if you are in their vicinity, you get to hear them more often than you get to see them!
