I can buy this stuff in the grocery store, with or without the needles.

Good morning Worldly Puzzlers.

The leaves are good to eat after you take the pickers off...fruit is nice and juicy..

Very pretty....TootieZ...I hope I am never hungry enough to eat the cactus...I will just take your word for it.

Makes great jelly but, boy, is it a job to get all the stickers off so that you can handle it.

This is prickly pear cactus. It grows freely here. You can eat the pads (the green part with the prickers) as Christina and TootieZ mentioned. The fruit comes on after the flowers, just like other fruits grow. From the fruit you can make syrup or jelly or add the juice to drinks -- I've had a prickly pear margarita and my son loves prickly pear snow cones. It's yummy!

One more thing - prickly pear is called 'nopal' (singular) or 'nopales' (plural) in Spanish. There is a bug that will sometimes make a web like home on the pads. The bug is red. This was the very first red colored dye and was used by the Aztecs and Mayans. The Spaniards were in love with the More...

Wow, very informative today.

I used to have a hedgehog that I named Cactus. Funny thing was that I decided to name it after the road of the place tht I bought him from. Then I found out that they live on Cactus Road!

I didn't know beaches bloomed. Because this is what I'm seeing, it looks like low tide. Good picture. 03/01/08 Sat.

I'd love to stroll barefoot on this beach. Nothing is more restful, to my way of thinking, then having a nice sandy beach to yourself at dawn or dusk, and being able to beachcomb. I've spent my happiest hours doing that.

AND NO CACTI.
