Talk about anything and everything, but place your comments in the right categories so that people on slow internet connections can still enjoy the site. Also, be nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Fairly large, aren't they?

Yes--not like sparrows but not big like eagles--it's unusual (in our state anyway) to see four together like that--usually we see them high up in gum trees and in ones or pairs--I think it's amazing to have been able to get this photo--whoever it was--Bravo.

I have had up to 7 in my yard at once. Love the kookaburras.

It was me. Lane Cove National Park is a picnic area so they are out for what they can get! And are very good at it too. I was foolish enough to turn my back on these four (and two others in the offing) to eat my BBQ sausage in a slice of bread with onions and sauce. You are not supposed to feed the birds. Does it count when the thieving sod swipes it out of your hand?!

Why aren't they all hiding in a tree?

The vantage point for picnic swiping is better on the post.

Tut, tut Kate - 'thieving sods'? That's no way to address one of Australia's famous icons. You should learn to eat faster.

Like all animals if they are around people long enough they learn how to move quick enough to grab your lunch and they have very little fear

So this is what kookaburras look like! One on the lookout, three on the march. I've seen this formation in other birds, but usually it's for bugs, worms, etc. Hope they didn't get heartburn from the sauce...

Kookaburras are not shy when there's food around! Great photo, Kate!

I sent in a photo of the culprit as well with his loot ... unfortunately when I squared it off I had to edit out the kiddo's accusatory pointing finger in the corner of the shot.

Hope we get to see that photo too, Kate -- sounds like a funny one! The birds drove me crazy out in Hawaii -- they didn't have time for you to finish your toast and leave them crumbs. Nooo! I suppose we all have our scoundrel side.
