They are seeds from a cheesewood tree. I don't know the latin name. I don't think they are edible.

Natives of Austrailia, I read. Birds eat then they get replanted -- or as one description put it, "escape the garden." Apparently they are a menace in Jamaica, Hawaii, South Africa, New Zealand -- on and on. We never learn to leave the nice plants where they grew do we?

The Victorian Box - Pittosporum undulatum. It is classed a weed outside it's area anywhere in Australia. It has pretty flowers & a wonderful scent. There's a seedpod from a relative, Pittosporum revolutum waiting to appear as a jigsaw!!!

Cheesewood tree? Is the wood holey, like Swiss? Anyway, the berries are very pretty. At first I, too, thought they were some type of wild strawberries. Too bad such a pretty thing is a menace to some.

Pittosporum bicolour
Cheesewood is a small understorey tree of the wet eucalypt forests from the wetter regions of Tasmania. It has been described as the whitest Tasmanian wood although it does vary from cream to white. It is very hard and has been found to be excellent for kitchen utensils (Indeco).
