I heard that they stack stones in Maine, but I don't know for sure.

Hmmmmm. I wonder if the wire (barbed?) is holding them in or keeping something/one out???

Dorothea, They do stack stones all over New England. The stones come from the fields the settlers cleared for homesteads and preparing soil for crops. It was very hard to plow through the rocks so they usually piled them along their boundary lines in long rows.
