Also, be nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

I'm willing to be ignorant: what precisely am I looking at? It's pretty interesting, whatever it is!

Good morning Joan ... I too am willing to be ignorant. Wikipedia says it's an Australian wildflower, but that doesn't really help me. I'm guessing the flower has gone dormant???

It looks like opened seed pods to me. For a moment I thought I was looking at snow in the background until I realised that it must be white sand!

dI need to have my vision checked ... I thought I was looking at sleeping birds, with their heads tucked under their wings.

I hardly dared to finish it - I thought I was looking at a huge furry spider! Glad it was only a wild flower.

I thought it was "pods" of some kind of nut that had already fallen or some kind of fungus growing on the branch. Very interesting subject!

They are seed pods of the banksia plant - a native of Australia. The flowers have a beauty of their own, the seed pods can be whatever your imagination makes of them.

A favourite Australian childrens book, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie had evil characters 'the Bad Banksia Men' which scared me for life.

it's interesting reading everyone's comments--the website in Ian's link has some beautiful images of banksia flowers but even they are not soft and gentle like so many flowers like roses and daffodils etc. But those gnarled rough tough branches and seed pods look so familiar to me and they clearly look so strange to anyone not familiar with them.
