Those are called Burls. They don't necessarily come from sites of lost branches. They're highly treasured by people making wooden bowls, etc. on lathes and hand carving, because the grain is so swirly.

I've seen bowls and rifle stocks made from burls but never knew what a burl was. Thank you for another step in my education!

Wonderful photo, Kathy! I have a friend who carves wonderful bowls out of burls!! I haven't seen much of since he moved north away from Sydney. I rarely get to his "neck of the woods" & he hardly ever comes to Sydney anymore!
