John Flynn Memorial Alice Springs. What a man! I reckon that his work and that of Alf Traeger on the pedal radios set the scene for Australia embracing technology in the outback to offset the distances.

I've been studying Australia. How exciting to come upon this monument. I, too, wish the inscription were legible. There are certainly a lot of fascinating stories about those who have dared the outback! Terri, cute comments!

If you check John Flynn on Wikipedia, you'll find lots of info. He founded the Flying Doctor Service - but why the egg?

I believe this photo appeared on site quite a while ago, and if I remember correctly, this is a memorial stone marking John Flynn's (the original flying doctor) place of burial.

Richard, I'm going to guess that might be one of the devil's marbles, but am probably on the wrong side of the country.

Whether it is an egg, a Devil's Marble or a giant kidney stone he removed from a patient, you have to admit that it is eye catching. And VERY noticeable. And it gets us talking and thinking about the man. Which may be the point.

The plaque: ‘His vision encompassed the continent. He established the Australian Inland Mission and founded the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He brought to lonely places a spiritual ministry and spread a mantle of safety over them by medicine and the radio.’

A large eight ton boulder, from the Devils Marbles area, was put on a low loader and driven 480 kilometres south to Alice Springs by George Nicholls and placed here as a marker for his grave.
Unfortunately the stone had been taken from the highly sacred women's site of Karlu Karlu at the Devils More...

It's Fi photo! Thanks Fi. It's a great memorial to a wonderful man. The flying Doctor service doesn't only cater for emergencies now. They take specialists & nurses to remote areas & run clinics in different places regularly!

What an interesting bit of Australian history I've learned in just a few minutes today! The simplicity of the monument is striking. Now I'm off to read more about the Devil's Marbles. Thanks Fi, for a great photo.

Thanks, Elizabeth, for the wording as well as the history/herstory of the two boulders! The Flying Doctor service is a marvel of dedication. So, it is well that the doctor could be commemorated and that the sacred circle could be closed again. Have any of you been to see the Devil's Marbles?

Thank you Fi, and thank you Elizabeth for the info.

I've been telling my husband that for months, Heidi. Little does he know! You all really ARE educating me. On that vein, this site has some great Devil's Marbles photography:

In the above comment, I should have said "Gail" instead of "Heidi." Please excuse!
