Kay for the lovely picture. I remember your stating that you were part Indian and that is obviously an Indian name, is it Cherokee? I also admire the craftmanship of the building and the preservation efforts to keep it in such good shape on blustery Cape Hatteras(spelling?).

Shar, the eastern band of the Cherokees stayed mostly in the "high country", the mountains in NC. I haven't been able to find the source of the name "Chicamacomico" in a quick search, but I suspect that it came from the Croatans, who inhabited the northeastern coastal area in NC.

The actual lifesaving station was a much larger, shingled building. This little structure was the boathouse, the lifeblood of lifesaving operations. It was used mostly as a barn during the 20th century, until historians rediscovered it and started preservation efforts.
