These are the first toad stools that I've seen that actually look like a comfortable seat for a toad to sit in!

I do hope that isn't a real toad "stool" or I would have to agree with Ian. That was some toad!

They were about 6 inches diameter, Joann. I also submitted a photo just of the middle, taken from above, that shows their beautiful red/gold coloring.

As the others have said--some toad--but it's nice to know that you know they are toadstools and not mushrooms. A phun photo!

These look like boletes, which disseminate their spores through pores on the underside of the caps, rather than along gills, which many mushrooms have. Some boletes are very tasty, but some can make you sick (though they aren't deadly). Like other wild mushrooms, you need to be CERTAIN of your identification before you snack on these!

Looks to me like this toadstool has a foot stool, too. Or maybe it's a toad recliner in full, flat position??? Of course, the second toad stool could be an ocassional table for toad munchies>

TerrierCyn is right. They are certainly boletes, of which the vast majority are edible. My favurite is boletus edulis, also known as cep, king bolete or penny bun. During the season - July to October - I often go into the local woods to look for them.
