The gum tree's resilience after what nature throws at them is amazing, using the heat to germinate new plants!

Joann's comment reminds me of the problems we had in the US with our redwood trees. To "save" these trees, any forest fires were immediately extinguished. However, this allowed a lot of tinder to accumulate around the trees, and when a BIG fire came that could NOT be controlled, it was More...

This was taken near Marysville in Aug 09 to show both the heat of the fire via the burnt sap & the new life exploding near it. Thanks to Gath for his choice of it for a new year photo.

l agree that this is a great image for the new year. So many of us have undergone trials by fire and otherwise, this past year as in other years, and this is a perfect symbol for endurance in the face of what can appears to be insurmountable odds. If the tree can make it, so can we!
