From what I can remember from my high school biology - the wispy bit at the bottom of the pod is what is left of the flower which has swelled to contain the seeds where it was fertilised by whatever means the flower used. So I suppose if it was edible that is the protective cover for the seeds. Does that make sense?

Colleen, it looks like a purple pepper of sorts - and they carry seeds - wish I could remember my biology class terms! When is a pod not a pod and is a fruit?

That color is amazing! eaa, you DEFINITELY need to give us more information, if you have it. I have never seen anything like it. (But I have never been to Tazmania.)

I wonder how big this seed pod is? That royal purple color is beautiful! I Googled "purple seed pod" and got zillions of hits, but the first couple of pages yielded nothing that looks like this. Great photo, eaa. I'm in the queue for more info!

One site that I visited mentioned that this plant is also known as "purple appleberry." Nothing that I read indicates wheter or not it's edible -- do you know, eaa? The one picture here, from eaa, is much deeper in hue that photos that I found on the Web, which are more of a light lavendar. Thanks, eaa!
