I can vouch for the colourful buildings on Burano. A very pretty place. A bought a magnificent lacy tablecloth there in a shop. Venice was probably my favourite place I've been to on my travels.

We stayed on the island of Murano when we visited Venice - the islands are definitely the best place to stay and well worth a visit. They are so peaceful, especially Torcello which was me favourite. Thank youfor bringing back happy memories

It's funny how 'right' these bright colours seem in a warm climate. If we saw houses in these colours in our more northern climes the reaction would be something like "What were they thinking!" In fact in some of our newer subdivisions they probably would not be allowed.

I was thinking the same thing, Bev! Makes you think what fun, artsy people must live in these houses --- and don't we ALL want to be fun and artsy?? Alas, we also want to fit in, and these WOULD be jarring in a traditional setting. So let's celebrate diversity!

So lovely - and I agree with the preceding discussion - although the "traditional" colors in many of our early restored towns have been shown to be wrong, that they were once much more colorful (my cynical archeologist's comment here!). I love the colors in many of the old towns of Europe - and this photo is beautiful!

Just to throw a spanner into the works-in West Wales houses are as colourful--such a contrast to North Wales where slate is what is used for walls, roofs, roads, fences--I never did find out why--but that's a wet cold climate on the whole and those colours look great.
