what on earth do these house?? people, animals, chickens? They look very small.

Surely people don't live in those!!!Very quaint and interesting, though.

Anne, you may be right. It looks like chickens under the one house.
 |  |
You can see the chicken poop under the house. LOL
 |  |
I agree with Big Red, it looks like a few chooks under the right hand house. Whose photo?
 |  |
Do you suppose each person has their own bedroom with a view every direction.
 |  |
It might be a yam house where they store the yams after the harvest. Have a similiar thing in PNG.
 |  |
I think they are raised outhouses, and everything joins the chicken poop!
 |  |
If they are for people, they might have to sleep standing up!!! LOL!!!
 |  |
Whatever the house, they are very nice looking little huts. Perhaps a larger one on the waterfront would be nice for humans.

Interesting. The thatched rooves seem to have faces worked into them. Is this one of Lorraine's photos?
 |  |
Gil from Gippsland, I think it may be one of Lorraine's photos

It is one of my photos Anne. The houses that people lived in were made of similar materials, but bigger (of course). These are shrines. The number of clans in a village is signified by the number of shrines -one male shrine (ngadhu), one female shrine (bhaga), and one sacrificial pole (peo) for More...

Lorraine, thank you very much for your clarification of the shrines. It does sound interesting.
