I thought Kookaburras sat in old gum trees. This one has obviously adapted to urban living! That's an impressive beak. Wish I could remeber which beak type went with which food choice.

So nice to see a good picture of a kookaburra after singing about him all these years! It was a long time before I knew that gum trees are what we call eucalyptus. Does he really laugh?

I don't think he will laugh if you iron him when he's been on the clothesline long enough...

We have some sort of song about a possum in or up a gum tree. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Kookaburras are meat eaters. They catch and kill small snakes and lizards, and fish if you have a fish pond! They soon become very friendly if you throw meat out for them. And yes Barb, they do 'laugh'

Haven't thought abut that in years, Judy. This is the best I can do:
Raccoon up the 'simmon tree.'Possum up the gum
Never did see a pretty girl
But what I love her some.

CHO: Bile them cabbage down , boys
Bake those hot cakes brown
The only song that I can sing
Is Bile More...

A clothes line is an excellent vantage point for small lizards and snakes - or meat from the householder!

Kookaburras are related to our Kingfishers. Also carnivores.

So that's what a clothes line looks like! I've often wondered!

That's the frame of a whirl-a-gig clothesline, I think. The clothes surely smell sweet when they dry outside -- as best I recall.

"Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he,
Laugh Kookaburra laugh kookaburra,
Gay you life must be"
Fantastic picture Kate.
